December 2021 - Phase 2 Tree Action MCR Begins!

What a start to the new tree planting season!

Cllr Tracey Rawlins, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment,  helped plant the final fabulous Oak trees that will form a brand new feature avenue in Heaton Park.

The event kickstarts the next round of Tree Action MCR with even more big trees being planted all over the City.  By the end of March, it is hoped that a further 1200 big trees will have been planted that all neighbourhoods in Manchester will have benefitted.

Chosen for their beauty, longevity, biodiversity value and climate resilience, the Oak Avenue will be a fabulous legacy of Tree Action MCR to be enjoyed by visitors to Heaton Park for many years to come.

Cllr Rawlins also had some rather dashing help on hand - not quite a military escort, but nearly!

Diane Hawkins,  the High Sheriff for Greater Manchester (a traditional role dating back hundreds of years.. think Sheriff of Nottingham - but nicer)  came along in her frock coat and tri-cornered hat, and  the Lord Lieutenant for Greater Manchester sent along not one but two of his able deputies to help out - Carl Austin - Behan OBE DL and Karen Lee DL.

There was a distinct reason for this.. the Lord Lieutenants' office as the Queens Regional representatives are helping to oversee and promote the Queens Green Canopy Project a campaign to plant trees in celebration of the Queens Platinum (or should that be Plantium?!)  Jubilee in 2022.

Greater Manchester is the first place to be unveiled as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) “Champion Cities” programme, which has been launched to celebrate some of the nation’s outstanding cities which have trees as a central part of their plans for green spaces.

And so it begins! Lots more big trees to be planted in Manchester, so watch this space for updates!
