March 2022 - Ceremonial Oak Tree Planting for Queens Green Canopy at Wythenshawe Park!

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and businesses are being encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during jubilee year.

Why  this particular day? Well Friday 11 March 2022 – is the seventieth day of the year in which The Queen marks the seventieth anniversary of her accession.

Our first Queens Green Canopy planting took place at Heaton Park in December 2021.

Since then, over 150 new trees have been planted and registered as being part of the Queens Green canopy scheme, with more to follow.

But that’s not all!

Through our Tree Action MCR campaign and with the support of other partners including City of Trees, this season we will have planted a whopping 4000 new trees across the City, plus over 11000 hedge trees (that’s approx 3km long of new hedging) and 7 new community orchards.

Its fitting that on the day we planted this wonderful ceremonial English Oak tree to formally celebrate the QGC Jubilee Planting, we did so  so here in wonderful Wythenshawe park.

Wythenshawe park is home to some of the finest trees in the City, and indeed is home to what we think is the City’s oldest tree, just at the back of the Hall there – a 400 year old beauty known affectionately as Cromwell’s Beech.

We hope that this lovely oak tree outlives them all, and will be a fitting reminder of the Jubilee year celebrations.

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Cllr Rabnawaz Akbar, Tree Action MCR's Noel Nugent,
Carl Austin-Behan OBE DL and Cllr Tracey Rawlins plant our new Oak Tree.

A Team effort!
