April-May 2022

Coming to the end of  the planting season, and its been another fantastic year.

Despite all the challenges presented to us by Covid, people have worked together across the City. Community Groups, Councillors, Council staff and environmental organisations to get big trees established in every neighbourhood in Manchester.

Working with City of Trees, we have planted even more trees than we expected, as funding support by Government's Urban tree Challenge Fund helped us to identify more areas for planting.

We are planting for now, not just for generations to come. And more will follow. It's not over yet!

In the two years Tree Action MCR has been running, we have increased Council controlled street tree numbers by 10%, planting over 2200 mature, climate resilient specimens.

They  will all be looked after and watered individually for the next three years, to help with their establishment and help them on their way to making the city lovelier, and more climate resilient.

No mean feat!  We have also planted 8  new community orchards, working with communities that will also benefit from ongoing training and support by leading experts the Orchard Project.

We have had some challenges - intense periods of hot weather, localised flooding and (very limited) vandalism.

Massive thanks must go to all those who got involved, from the planning and preparation, the supply and ordering, to the planting and maintenance.

Tree Action MCR has delivered. The trees are just coming into leaf, some in blossom, and all look magnificent.

Get out there and have a look - along streets and roadsides, near schools, in parks.. It's time to enjoy them!
